theyre young and tough, and especially wonderful too, easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the windy city! the sets a chicago soul gem from the early 70s, recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe thats different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene, definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like the delfonics or soul generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. arrangements are great – handled by tom tom washington, eugene record, and cliff davis, very much at the best brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. the title cuts a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier sly, slick, & wicked track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called this is the lost generation, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.

hedonism is an ethical theory that pleasure, in a sense of satisfaction of desires, is the highest good and proper aim of human life, and this seems to also be hdnsm’s ultimate musical objective. their first release debuted as a kickstarter of “variant ep” v.a. series, showcasing three very different yet highly contemplative creations from cumsecade, anestie gomez and man spider. hdnsm flips the coin and for the second episode of “variant” series it lands on two very solid, incredibly moody and extensive works from fresh talents shcaa and cleymoore. the ep features two very different tracks yet they share the same minimalistic core. both works are blessed with intricate micro-drum arrangements for those feeling groove hungry whilst still standing tall in the experimental abstract realm pleasing those who crave unusual frequencies. a-side’s “masquée” is one of shcaa’s typical rides between sound and silence and it is hard to find another artist who understands sound gaps between grooves better than shcaa does. with his signature vocals and an incredibly delicious duality between acoustic instrumentalism and electronic slamming, this is a groovy, highly deep, very intelligently arranged piece. the flip-side “nebula”, signed by pluie/noir’s boss cleymoore, is a tip of an iceberg when it comes to the art of stripping down. in an apparently thin canvas of minimal drum arrangements there’s a vast amount of sound frequencies underneath a steady ever-kicking groove, tricking your mind into thinking that you’re hearing less than you actually perceive. nebula is hypnotic and dense but focused and sophisticatedly groovy. like the repetitive vocals you’ll hear throughout the b-side, this v.a. sticks to your mind like an addiction of some sort and pushes hdnsm to a new standard of avant-garde and forward-thinking attitude. as before, this vinyl only release comes in a gorgeous cover featuring a painting from max binski and the number of copies available is limited

the second release of inkblots involves three great artists deeply active into the international techno scene: the japanese go hiyama and the berlin based duo i/y. on side a, go hiyama’s first track ‘recur’ delivers sinister atmospheres matched with a tough kick and industrial bleepy elements. slow and paranoic drones get in and out contributing to enlarge the sound perception. the second track ‘prop’ introduces elegant hi-hats and strident synths. a captivating kick perfectly embraces the shrill synths waving together with the sharp drum, what remains of the first side is just tense ambients, forewarning the journey is not over. side b smells like a dark club firing up, indeed i/y’s aim is not different at all. ’thesys 0000.001’ debuts with a thin bassline and distorted grave surroundings. the track evolves with clean slap hats sound in an empty echo chamber. deep timbres rise and fall, turning the entire route gently aggressive. the second track is an idm experiment which keeps a trippy approach and the clarity of claps and hi-hats. solid as the first one, ‘thesys 0000.003’ sets itself as an hypnotic but pleasant moment where suspicious fragments quickly appear and disappear: a sparkled trip to be enjoyed anytime but not by anyone.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. tireless producer, tronic boss and top international dj christian smith here steps up for his first release on plus 8. over the years christian has offered up a high volume and high quantity of techno inclined singles for myriad labels (bedrock, systematic, 100percent pure, soma), so it only makes sense he now finds himself on one of the scenes most reliable outposts for such material. the two track ep kicks off with house is house which is, as the name suggests, a little house-ier than the flip, but still deals in plenty of heavy bass weight and slick repetition. the devil is in the detail filtered, dark voices, rattling cowbells, washes of white noise synths and long, thin, forward looking pads - all of which are married to a mid-tempo groove. the more forceful indulge me then follows. taught kick drums start immediately as claps and subtle synth stabs swell in volume until they eventually fill out the whole airwaves. squirming behind are thin and icy steel lines until the first drop when the deliciously bouncy groove sets in proper. far from aping the usual detroit and chicago tropes, christian smith has once again crafted two classy dance floor joints that are not only exquisitely produced, but that bare all the usual hallmarks of christian smith, one of the most consistent producers in the game.

in january 2011 mark was invited by erik wiegand (aka errorsmith) to make some presets for his new software synthesizer which he was building for native instruments. after developing about 40 sounds*, mark decided to rework his ul8 project by extending the pattern generating systems used in its construction, which he then connected to the sounds produced in erik s synthesizer. the result is this double 12 single, featuring 9 tracks and a remix from mark s friend and colleague mat steel.
